Spartans again best in sectional GRUNDY CENTER - This is about all Grundy Center has had to express.
Spartan seniors Danny Eisenman and Carter Burmester were left to divvy up the last district qualifier medal at Friday's Class 1A sectional boys' golf meet at Town & Country Golf Club, as Grundy Center claimed a team title for your fourth year uninterruptedly.
Head coach Dennis Dirks passed out the medals following the eight-team tournament, telling his squad's top finishers to "split it up" before another might be acquired from your Iowa Senior high school Athletic Association.
Brad HamesEisenman and Burmester both shot 83 over their par-72 home course on another wet and windy spring day in central Iowa.
"I think our coach will most likely get one more for people, otherwise I am not sure who gets it," said Eisenman, who had previously been on Grundy Center's latter state tournament teams. "Flip a coin as well."
The senior-laden Spartans scored a 340 to steer a final team standings, gaining their place at next week's district meet in Cedar Falls and granting an additional team exactly the same chance.
AGWSR, using its 366 total, finished third to succeed to districts together for the first time since winning its 2A sectional in 2005. Clarksville, behind runner-up medalist Jaron Wagner's 79, progresses with a 350.
Wagner lost around the second hole of a sudden-death playoff with NU High's Joe Weber, a three-time state qualifier, for medalist honors. Don Bosco sophomore Carson Barron, who tied Eisenman for 21st place at state last spring, placed third along with his 81.
BCLUW were only available in sixth with its 376 team total, led by Chad Frazer's 89.
"You consider the scores today and there's probably only 12 or 13 scores under 90, but there were a couple of the lower five and four of the dozen under 90, and so i look at that and that i can see it's really a tough track today," said Dirks. "Damage control is what it comes from, be capable of maintain the ball in play. You understand there's destined to be plenty of bogeys out there by everybody, so stay away from the big numbers and you need to be capable of appear in using a respectable score. Which is might know about did for the most part."
The Spartans' four counting scores counseled me top-10 finishers, with Jordan Curren carding an 86 and Clay Burmester contributing an 88.
Eisenman, the reigning NICL West medalist, had no spectacular shots to communicate of, he explained, but just one double bogey as part of his 40-43-83 day.
"I think we're all pretty relaxed and understand how to play this golf course and then we don't really have to put a lot of pressure on ourselves," he explained. "The smartest thing I could tell the inventors is merely be smart. In case you have one bad hole, maintain head up, keep playing and merely play your own personal game."
The course and the conditions allowed for just six total birdies on the day, with Clay Burmester comprising Grundy Center's only sub-par number together with his 3 for the par-4 third hole.
"The thing about our golf course is that it's a tough spot to shoot well, and you element in the wind and it can make the course even tougher than it already is," said Dirks. "So the boys are likely a little bit disappointed with a few from the higher scores that they shot but as well, it is usually from time to time a tricky course to score."
Eisenman stated it was obviously a "two-club wind" the entire day, however the Spartans still managed their game sufficiently to adopt a 10-stroke victory in advance of Clarksville.
AGWSR, which finished fourth behind Grundy Center, Gladbrook-Reinbeck and BCLUW at Monday's NICL West meet in Marshalltown, was led by Owen Abkes' round of 87. Bryce Eichmeier shot 88, B.J. Reents had 91 and Derek Schipper 100 to help you the Cougars go forward.
"We knew it turned out likely to be tough, particularly with Grundy Center playing at their house course," said Cougars head coach
Brad Hames, "but I told the guys that they can make next two teams and it's destined to be a dogfight, and yes it ended up being that.
"It's been an irritating year for proud of our little ones, they've battled through all of it year long. We woke up this morning also it was raining and windy i said, 'It's merely another day, exactly like this has been all spring fellas,' so I'm satisfied with them for battling through today."
Dunkerton and Waterloo Christian tied for fourth at 374 with BCLUW close behind in sixth place. The Comets came into Friday's sectional talk to higher hopes than having their season visit unexpected end.
"We came in thinking we had the opportunity and I think we did, we simply didn't play in addition to we're able to and also the kids are aware that," said BCLUW head coach Heath Rhinehart. "With Grundy Center hosting, knowing that almost certainly these were likely to win, and we all had that opportunity. If we'd played in addition to we're capable of, which was in your grasp. It's disappointing."
Frazer charted the Comets' only birdie along with his 3 about the par-4 eighth the second time around, finishing as BCLUW's only scorer below 90 and winding up 12th overall.
"That's one kid you are able to count on day in and day trip," said Rhinehart. "He's had time that will put up solid numbers, he may not position the lowest score around, but he's consistently gonna give us sub-42 or 43. Also are you able to ask for, he played great all year long, the conference meet established that."
Brad HamesCole Thompson was next looking for BCLUW together with his 95. Zach Johnson and Gabe Reyes both shot 96, followed closely by Logan Simpson's 97 and a 103 from Jimmy Sharp.
Grundy Center and AGWSR will go to Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls next Friday for your district meet, joined by eight other schools for the 11 a.m. tournament. The very best two teams and four individuals from each district advance towards the 1A state meet, to be held May 27-28 at Lake Panorama National Resort in Panora.
